When chemical pesticides are used 60-90% of earth worms are destroyed, Earth worms are important to your soils health.
Test your soil Ph, you want between 6.5 - 7 ph. To much over and you need some lime spreed. You want a mix of clay, silt sand if the soil is compacted, then an aeration of pulling plugs out of the soil allow good nutrient flow. Choose a grass that is a varity blend for your area, then sun, shade or both.
Mow often but no to short only 1/3 of the blade should be removed. Cutting your grass short causes root structure to be exposed, plus the soil drys out faster. to keep your length 2.5 - 3 inches in length.
Watering is the most common error, either to much water or to little, to get it right measure the water one inch a week is the goal. less it to little and more is too much. You want your grass to develop deep roots going down as much as 4 - 6 inches. Water in early morning, when water is less subject to evaporation.
